Program Description

hero medical technician phlebotomy coursesThe phlebotomy courses are to prepare students for phlebotomy technician careers in laboratory settings such as hospitals, clinics, and blood banks. Student will learn terminology used in anatomy associated to blood collection. Students will be able to understand and adhere to proper protocols and procedures used in laboratory. environment such as proper site preparation and collection of capillary and venous specimen for transport to the laboratory to ensure stability of the sample, logging specimens into the laboratory and processing of laboratory specimens.

 

 

           

 

Phlebotomy Technician Training - Admissions Requirements

The plebotomy courses are to prepare students for phlebotomy technician carees in laboratory settings such as hospital, clinics, and blood banks. Students will learn terminology used and anatomy associated to blood collection. Students will be able to understand and adhere to proper protocols and proceduresused in a laboratory environment such as proper site preparation and collection of capillary and venous specimens for transport to the laboratory to ensure stability of the sample, logging specimens into the laboratory and processing of laboratory specimens

 

Admissions Requirements:

  • Submit completed phlebotomy Technician Program Admission Application.
  • Transcripts of high School graduation or GED completion.
  • Two completed reference forms.
  • Copy of current immunizations. Must have the following immunization current:
    • PPD no older than 1 year.
    • Tetanus no older than 10 years.
    • Hep B series (3 shots over a period of 4-5 months).
    • MMR (mumps meales, rubella).
  • Proof of physical exam completed within the last year by a MD. or D.O.
  • Current CPR certification for Healthcare providers.
  • A criminal backgroundcheck and urine drug screen prior to entrance to the clinical porttion of the program (within 6 weeks and prior to registration).

Basic Phlebotomy Lecture

Phlebotomy serviceThe student will be trained to perform a variety of blood collection methods using proper techniques and precautions including: vacuum collection devices, syringes, capillary, skin puncture, butterfly needles and blood culture specimen collection on adults children and infants. Emphasis will be placed on infection prevention, proper patient identification, proper labeling of specimens, and quality assurance. Student will learn specimen handling, processing and accessioning. Student will learn the theory and principle of laboratory tests and perform the test in the student laboratory. The testing performed will include: manual hematocrits, urinalysis dipstick, fecal occult blood, erythrocyte sedimentation rate and pregnancy testing.

 

 

Basic Phlebotomy Lab

An intermediate type of health profession work-base instruction that helps students gain practical experience in the discipline, enhanced skills and integrate knowledge. The emphasis is on practical work experience for which the student has already acquired the necessary theoretical knowledge and basic skills. The student will demonstrate skills development in the performance of a variety of blood collection methods using proper techniques and standard precautions which includes: vacuum collection devices, syringes, capillary skin puncture, butterfly needles, blood culture and specimen collection o adults, children and infants. Emphasis will be placed on infection prevention, proper patient identification, proper labeling of specimens, and quality assurance. Students will learn specimen handling, processing and accessioning. Students will develop the skills, knowledge and attitude required to function in a professional manner in the health care setting. Laboratory information services, client services and quality assurance will be covered. Student must perform a minimum of 100 venipunctures and 10 successful skin puncture.
